Shipley Leisure Centre
Shipley Leisure Centre hosts all of the City of Bradford meets we attend each year. Their end of season meet is pretty much the only one to be found on the calendar around the same time as Nationals, so is ideal for our non-National qualifiers. They also host a popular Christmas meet too, but don't let it distract you from or own!
It's very likely you'll find yourself headed to Shipley each year, especially in the early years.
Shipley leisure centre hosts most of the popular City of Bradford open meets, it offers:
- 6 lane, 25m competition pool
- Diving pit (warm up/swim down)
- Electronic timing
- Medium sized spectator gallery
- Car park with well marshalled over flow
For the hungry, there's a cafe on site (over looking the pool) and a supermarket next door. There are also plenty of pubs and restaurants a short walk away.

Opposite the leisure centre is a large pay and display car park. The swimming club often arrange for free parking on the day of their meets, but don't take this for granted. There also used to be a large supermarket carpark to the rear of the leisure centre, and smaller town centre car parks within walking distance, but the club usually does a fine job of directing everyone to suitable overflow car parks. Just head for the leisure centre.
Shipley tends to be one of those locations where you're torn between going home and staying over. In fact, it's often one of the first meets where families do stay for the weekend and bump in to team mates. With that in mind, here are a few pointers to hotels we've used previously, just so you're not on your own.
The Ibis Shipley has a picturesque canal-side setting and being an Ibis you know exactly what you're getting in terms of quality. Just down the road and round the corner from the pool, so a tiny early morning drive is all you'll need. There are often good deals to be had if you book early enough. Our advice, book as soon as you know you've been accepted to the meet. Guaranteed to find team mates and other clubs staying here too.
The Abbey Lodge is a medium sized B&B with a maze of corridors linking together a bunch of terraced houses. Not to everyone's taste, but has a modern feel and a friendly welcome. It does have the distinct advantage of sitting on the road behind the pool though, so ideal for lazy coaches. Wake up, eat, 2 minute walk - job done! You'll usually find the odd 1 or 2 swimmers from other clubs staying here too.
