29th August - New Chief Coach Appointed

A new chief coach has recently been appointed for the DARTES training scheme, the background leading to this new appointment is as follows:

A swimming development partnership model was approved by the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council (DMBC) in April 2005. The partners involved include the Doncaster Metropolitan Amateur Swimming Association (DMASA), the local swimming clubs, the DARTES training scheme and the DMBC. The aim of the partnership is to have a co-ordinated approach to swimming development across the borough and to enable children to have the opportunity to reach their true potential within swimming.

As part of the partnership model, the DMBC has been successful in employing a full time chief coach for the DARTES training scheme. The new coach will also act as an advisor and support all the feeder clubs within the DMASA.

The newly appointed coach is Roy Shepherdson, who will start at the beginning of October by doing a number of presentations for the parents / swimmers of DARTES and the DMASA feeder clubs. Details of venues and dates to be advised.

Mick Gartside who has been the DARTES Chief Coach for the last seven years will continue up to the Winter Yorkshire Championships in October. Mick's dedication and commitment as a volunteer over the years has enabled the club to survive. He has overseen many DARTES successes at county, district and national championships and will still be involved with swimming in Doncaster in the future years.

Profile of New Chief Coach - Roy Shepherdson

In his own words a profile of the newly appointed DARTES chief coach Roy Shepherdson:

Born Hull 1978

I started swimming for Hull Olympic STC in 1987 as a 8/9 year old. I progressed through the ranks slowly competing at County, District and eventually National levels, winning 6 North Eastern Counties medals at Age Group and Youth levels.

In 1996 Hull Olympic STC merged with another Hull club to form Kingston upon Hull Swimming Club where I became their first senior male swimmer winning a number of Yorkshire gold medals, 2 North Eastern Counties medals and an English Schools National gold medal.

In 1999 with a shortage of coaches at Kingston upon Hull Swimming Club I was asked to take over as a coach to the Senior Squad on a short term basis. In my first full season as a coach I took a squad of swimmers with no National Qualifying Time's to having 3 swimmers with individual National Qualifying Time's and another 2 swimmers who qualified for the Nationals as members of relay teams. After this success I was promoted to National Age Squad Head Coach.

From the 2002-2005 National Age Group Championships I have had coached 12 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medallists, 4 Top Boy Award winners and numerous other finalists. From these I have been selected onto the World Class Programmes in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and the National Backstroke camp in 2004. I have been a coach to the Yorkshire Inter-counties squad twice and North Eastern Counties Youth squad once.

I look forward to passing on my knowledge and expertise to the swimmers of Doncaster and have no doubt that I will continue to be as successful here as I have been in Hull...here's to the future!

Roy Shepherdson

Roy will begin his role as DARTES chief coach at the beginning of October and will start coaching on Monday 10th October.
