Yorkshire Development Camp
28 Apr 2019: Every season sees the top swimmers in the country picked for Swim England's National Development Programme. This is a series of camps intended to teach young athletes the skills and techniques they will need to excel in the sport. It starts around April time with the best 11 year olds attending the County Pathway Programme. We've been recording these selections in our Honours section since 2015.
|Programme||Led by||Qty||Age Range|
|County Development||County||792||11 year olds|
|Regional Development||Region||288||12 year olds|
|National Development||Swim England||250||13-14 year olds|
|National Event Camps||Swim England||90||15-16 year olds|
|International Comps||Swim England||40||18 year olds|
|SE Performance Squad||Swim England||20||22 years and under|
|Podium Potential||British Swimming||30||15 years +|
|Podium||British Swimming||24||15 years +|
The table above shows the numbers involved in those camps nationally. You'll notice a big drop as athletes approach the point where they're expected to perform on the highest stage. It takes a lot of hard work to continue getting selected throughout a swimmer's development.
For 2019, we're delighted to announce that Jesse Goodwin (Adw) has been selected for the County Development camps. Alongside him, Coach Jordan Allerton returns for a 2nd year.
The first county camp was held on Sunday 28th April starting around 9:30. There was an hour of land training to make sure all those selected had the basic skills and good posture. A big emphasis on squats and lunges, led by different coaches from around Yorkshire.
Next up was an hour in the pool, preceded by 15mins of pre-pool. The first pre-pool was run by Coach Hannah from BoKirklees, running through their pre-pool (a combination of Russian Twists, Back Extensions, Squats, and Press-ups). Later in the day, Coach Jordan took them through 15mins of Dartes pre-pool which you should already be familiar with.
The two pool sessions covered Freestyle and Backstroke, going in to detail on such things as streamlining, stroke counts, and distance per stroke. There was time spent looking at drills used by the various home programmes and what they each achieve. Cruely, Coach Jordan introduced the camp to a few sculls including everyone's favourite tuck scull!
Congratulations to both Jesse and Coach Jordan on their selections this year. This is something for all our young 9 and 10 year olds to be aspiring to in the future.
Big Distance Test for Phase 4
16 Apr 2019: Phase 4 bravely endured the big 2000m test set on Tuesday evening. A competition ensued among the top 3 with Callum Broadhead (Arm) leading the way to set a time inside the all-time top 20 (27.02). For those who love records (and beating them), a quick look at June 2014 shows how the record was set.
A little behind Callum this time round were Cody Watkinson (Adw) and Luke Gilliver (Drn). All three around 27 mins which isn't bad, but the record is around 2mins faster - sounds easy to achieve over 2000m, right?
Overall, some big improvements from last time the test was run in November. These times can drop very quickly with good effort in training. Set your targets for next time.
