The Stories behind the Headlines

Testing Times for Phase 4

27 Oct 2019: While Phase 5 were away in Fuerteventura, our young stars of the future were battling through the 2x800m Freestyle test set with Coach Jordan. As a portent of what was to follow maybe, Megan Wood (Arm) headed the table with an impressive 10:31 average. The following weekend that translated to Winter NER Bronze at the 400m!

This test is all about giving them the courage to go out hard, twice, back to back. The average time is used for ranking purposes, so it's important to perform well on both.

For reference, to give them something to aim for, the Phase 4 record for this test is 9:53. That was in December 2016. Follow the link and compare your times with theirs. All the big names have done this set previously. The All Time ranking column gives you a clue as to where you currently sit in the big picture going back to 2011.

Safeguarding Course

16 Oct 2019: Every 3 years our staff need to renew their Safeguarding and Protecting Children qualifications. This mandatory training consists of a 3 hour workshop, which 21 of Doncaster's volunteers attended on Wednesday evening. The majority were from Dartes, but spaces were also opened up to the rest of our swimming community and we were happy to welcome familiar faces from Armthorpe and the local triathlon club.

There have been many changes and new additions to the subject matter in the last 3 years. Social media and other online concerns have appeared en masse. All the old favourites are still covered though, not least parental behaviour, which brings us to the Magic Sports Kit video. See how far through the following video you get before realising what powers are possessed by the magic sports kit ...

While watching that video, take a critical look at your own behaviour and see if you recognise yourself even slightly. Be honest - a number of you definitely should! How can you change your actions to reduce the negative impact these young athletes are talking about? Don't stand idly by if this is happening near you, point the parent concerned at this video. In fact, it's probably worth pointing all your parenting friends at the video too, swimming (or sport in general) isn't the only activity this is relevant to.

Partnership with Youth Sport Nutrition

1 Oct 2019: Fresh on the heels of our announcement of a new partnership with FINIS we are proud to announce the renewal of another partnership.

For the last couple of years we've been involved with Youth Sport Nutrition. Their mission is to deliver a sports nutrition range designed for the unique nutritional demands of younger sports people. Whereas most similar supplements are targeted at adult performers, YSN are all about the young athlete. That suits swimming perfectly.

This partnership gives our members a discount code for various products in their store. It also provides us with handouts and occasional videos to help educate parents and young athletes about their nutritional needs. The emphasis is on education and supplementing an already good athlete diet. Their intention is not to compensate for a poor diet, it's important to get the foundations right first.

Their flagship product is PRO-TEEN. It's billed as "The Ultimate Athlete Constructor" as it provides all those post-exercise recovery ingredients we're forever telling our athletes they need to help their bodies repair themselves. That magic 20g of protein within 20min of finishing training is the cornerstone of the PRO-TEEN shake, but it also contains an equivalent amount of carbs alongside a mix of vitamins and minerals specially formulated for hard-working youth athletes. That means it provides the body with everything it needs to repair as much of the damage caused by intense training as possible (and 14hrs a week or more of swimming definitely qualifies as that). It does all of that in a tasty, easy to use milkshake-type drink.

Every year YSN provide us with a package of freebies for the coaches to distribute. Last year we selected Callie Ramshaw (Edl) and Hannah Newnham (Arm) after achieving spots in finals at English Nationals. This year we've gone with our top performers at British Summer Championships and a boy who should, if Yorkshire SA ever submit last weekend's results to British Swimming, be sitting on top of British Rankings for a few short-course events. Ella Bainbridge (Arm) won Silver for 200m Butterfly, and Madison Johnson (Arm) reached finals in 100m Butterfly and 200m IM. Callum Broadhead (Arm) has just won 4 Gold medals at Winter Yorkshires and will be representing Team Yorkshire at the National County Team Championships this weekend.

We intend to share these around each year, so work hard and earn your bag!

For the discount code talk to your coach. This is only really relevant to Phase 5. JDS and the younger athletes in Phase 4 should be concentrating on getting their diet correct first and learning which whole foods provide the recovery nutrients their bodies need. For anyone in need of a shaker bottle, Coach Dave has a cupboard full so be sure to ask.
